North Korea: A new era?
While North Korea gives an emotional farewell to its ‘dear leader’ Kim Jong-Il, who died of a heart attack on December 17, the world waits to see what will become of the regime in the hands of his young son Kim Jong-Un. In an attempt to smooth diplomatic relations, South Korea authorised the sending of two private delegations to Pyongyang to honour the late dictator. One was led by the widow of former South Korean President, Kim Dae-Jung, who had organised the first ever inter-Korean summit in 2000. The other by the President of Hyundai Group, Hyun Jung-Eun, who is investing in North Korea. The new regime has requested official condolences from Seoul as a prerequisite to any resumption of North-South dialogue. Officially, the two Koreas are still at war, as neither side has signed a peace treaty since the armistice in 1953, and sporadic acts of aggression do still occur. Experts also agree that Pyongyang has stalled all talks of de-nuclearisation. It is reported that North Korea is in possession of a number of ballistic missiles which have a range of between 600-700 kilometres. Some of them are capable of carrying nuclear warheads, a source of great tension in the region. All eyes now turn to China, the only ally of the regime. Its president Hu Jintao, who personally visited the North Korean Embassy in Beijing to pay his condolences, has expressed support for a resumption of six-party talks on de-nuclearisation. These negotiations between North and South Korea, the United States, China, Russia and Japan have been put on hold since December 2008. Euronews spoke to Robert Lawrence Kahn, a long-time adviser to the Chinese government. He gave his views on the direction North Korea will take under Kim Jong-Un, and the role China will play in the transition of power. Another year older and deeper in debt
It has been calculated the world’s top economies have 5.8 trillion euros worth of borrowings they will have to pay back in 2012. That is the Group of Seven leading economic nations, plus the so called BRICs — the biggest emerging countries Brazil, Russia, India and China. Most of those countries will have to pay higher rates of interest to borrow more. Japan in the top spot with 2.3 trillion euros, followed by the United States with the equivalent of 2.1 trillion euros. Italy needs to refinance 330 billion euros, France 282 billion and Germany 219 billion. Economist Francois Chaulet of Montsegur Finance said: “You see that 2012 starts with a number of problems similar to those we faced in 2011, that is the difficulties European states are having in lowering their debt and restarting their economies. It’s obvious that the economic situation is not very strong and won’t be during the first part of 2012.” The investors who are going to lend those governments money are very wary about how the weak global economy will effect their ability to repay, thence the high interest rates. Japan is not seen as having much trouble financing its debt load this year, even though it will have to pay more to borrow. Europe faces the biggest potential problems, particularly those countries which could see their credit ratings slide further. More about: Debt crisis, Economic crisis, Euro in crisis
Recent Advances in Parallel Virtual Machine and Message Passing Interface
Introduction
Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are the most frequently used tools for programming according to the message passing paradigm, which is considered one of the best ways to develop parallel applications. This volume comprises 42 revised contributions presented at the Seventh European PVM/MPI Users’ Group Meeting, which was held in Balatonfr ed, Hungary, 10 13 September 2000. The conference was organized by the Laboratory of Parallel and Distributed Systems of the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This conference was previously held in Barcelona, Spain (1999), Liverpool, UK (1998) and Cracow, Poland (1997). The first three conferences were devoted to PVM and were held at the Technische Universit t M nchen, Germany (1996), Ecole Normale Superieure Lyon, France (1995), and University of Rome, Italy (1994). This conference has become a forum for users and developers of PVM, MPI, and other message passing environments. Interaction between those groups has proved to be very useful for developing new ideas in parallel computing and for applying existing ideas to new practical fields. The main topics of the meeting were evaluation and performance of PVM and MPI, extensions and improvements to PVM and MPI, algorithms using the message passing paradigm, and applications in science and engineering based on message passing. The conference included four tutorials and five invited talks on advances in MPI, cluster computing, network computing, grid computing, and SGI parallel computers and programming systems.
