When New Serial Numbers Are Needed

Here are some of the situations in which you may need to enter a new serial number for your Autodesk software:

  • Converting an educational license to a commercial license
  • Starting a new subscription after the previous one expired
  • Issued a new serial number by a Contract Manager or Software Coordinator
  • Term extended on an existing license

Note about Suites: If you have a suite of products that use a single serial number, you must update the serial number for each product in the suite.

Update Serial Number from Renew License Screen

If your software subscription expires or your user permissions change, you may receive an activation screen with one of the following messages:

  • Renew your license
  • Contact your administrator to request permission to use this product

 

To renew your license for your Autodesk software:

  1. Get a new serial number. Individual users can renew their software subscription to replace an expired license. Enterprise users can contact their contract manager to get a new serial number.
  2. Enter the serial number in the renew license dialog box and click Activate.

Update Serial Number from Software Menu

You can change the serial number for your Autodesk software from within the Help menu of most products.

To change your serial number from the software menu:

  1. Start your Autodesk software.
  2. Follow one of these paths in your software Help menu (path may vary by product):
    • Help > About
    • Help > About [Product Name]
    • Help > Autodesk Product Information > About [Product Name]
  3. In the About window, click Manage License.


     
  4. In the License Manager window, click the arrow next to the product name to display product details.  Then click Update, next to Serial Number.
     
  5. Enter your product serial number and click the Activate button.

    Note: In some cases, you must restart the product to display the updated serial number.

Autodesk software needs to be uninstalled and reinstall in order to change the product key. Within the About window for products, or rather the Manage License button, the serial number can be changed but not the product key. This can result in a mismatch of numbers and subsequent license errors. This article is about how to change a serial number and product key without reinstallation. For example, is there a way to update an installed Autodesk Suite serial number and product key with an Autodesk Industry Collection serial number and the software-specific product key without reinstalling?

Solution:

Uninstall and reinstall the software. Since Autodesk Suite products have the suite-specific product key and Autodesk Industry Collection products use the product-specific product key, the software needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled to change the product license information stored in the  C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\AdLM\ProductInformation.pitfile.

With that said, if the same Autodesk software configuration is on multiple systems, the following workflow may help avoiding product re-installation:
  1. Uninstall the Autodesk Suite licensed software you would like to register with Autodesk Collection serial number on one computer.
  2. Install the Autodesk Collection software on that system per General installation workflow for Autodesk Products.
  3. License the Autodesk Collection software with new serial number and product key on that system.
  4. Copy C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\AdLM\ProductInformation.pitfile from that system to the other systems that have the same Autodesk software installed, but licensed with the Autodesk Suite serial number you would like to remove, and paste it over in the previous-license (old-license) machine. Note: When replacing ProductInformation.pit on other systems, for backup purposes, rename the original ProductInformation.pit file (e.g., Old_ProductInformation.pit). 
  5. Launch Autodesk software and follow license activation if prompted.

You don’t have to activate newer versions of Autodesk products. They are activated online automatically. However, you may have to activate offline in these two cases:

  • You have a perpetual license for a stand-alone 2016 (or earlier) product.
  • You have an education license and are offline.

Note: Autodesk no longer supports offline activation for 2021 products and later. If you have a perpetual license, you can activate your software by going online only once. After you activate online, you can continue to use 2021 software and later offline. This change doesn't apply to subscription network licenses or previous versions that you already activated offline. You can continue to use them as before.

Typical reasons for manual activation of perpetual license software:

  • No Internet access
  • Upgraded or reinstalled operating system
  • Changed request code
  • Modified computer hardware
  • Forced reactivation during troubleshooting

About manual activation

  • If you're a subscriber, don't activate manually. Your software will eventually fail. Follow this workflow only if you have a stand-alone, perpetual license or if you’re a student or educator with a stand-alone education license and no Internet connection.
  • You need a valid serial number and product key to activate. Before you start, find your serial number and product key.
  • Generate a request code to get an activation code. When you enter your serial number during offline activation, you receive a request code. Enter both the serial number and request code to get an activation code.

How to manually activate perpetual license software

Follow these steps to complete the manual activation process:

  1. Generate a request code
    • Disable your Internet connection and start your software to begin this offline process.
    • Click Activate on the Free Trial screen.
      Note: Autodesk software products use a free trial license until you activate them. Even if you purchased your software, you still need to activate it from the Free Trial screen.
    • Enter your serial number and product key. Click Next.
    • Select "Request an activation code using an offline method." Click Next.
    • Keep a record of the activation information you receive.
      You need your product name, serial number, product key, and request code to receive an activation code online or from a customer service specialist.
    • Click Close to resume using your software in free trial mode while the request is processed.
  2. Request an activation code
    To activate your software offline, you need to request an activation code while you're online.
    • Go to Get Activation Code Popup.
    • Enter your contact information, serial number, email address of the purchaser or software administrator, and the request code you generated.
    • Copy your activation code and follow the procedure for manual activation.
  3. Activate your software manually
    After you receive your activation code, you can activate your software from the Free Trial screens.
    • Disable your Internet connection, start the software, and click Activate on the Free Trial screen.
      Note: You see the manual activation screens only if you are not online. Autodesk software products use a trial license until you activate them. Even if you purchased your software, you still need to activate it from the Free Trial screen.
    • Enter your serial number and product key. Click Next.
    • Select "I have an activation code from Autodesk," enter the activation code, and click Next.
