Adobe Premiere Elements is a video editing software application published by Adobe Systems. It is a scaled-down version of Adobe Premiere Pro and is tailored to novice editors and consumers. The entry screen offers clip organization, editing and auto-movie generation options. Premiere Pro project files are not compatible with Premiere Elements projects files.

While marketed separately, it is frequently bundled for added value with Adobe Photoshop Elements. In 2006, it was identified as the number one selling consumer video editing software.^[3] Its main competitors are Final Cut Express (no longer sold), AVS Video Editor, PowerDirector, Pinnacle Studio, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Sony Vegas, Corel VideoStudio, and iMovie.

Unlike many of its competitors, Premiere Elements can handle unlimited video and audio tracks,^[4][5] with multiple keyframe effects applied to each clip, as well as picture-in-picture and chroma key capabilities. It also supports many third-party plug-ins for additional features, including Premiere Pro plug-ins, After Effects plug-ins, and VST effects. It can create bars and tone and a countdown leader, just like Premiere Pro.

This program also features real-time video rendering which allows the user to instantly preview edits made to the video timeline.

Premiere Elements is available for Windows and MacOS. It is not available as part of a creative cloud subscription, but rather as a single purchase or upgrade purchase.^[6]

Product history[edit]

• Adobe Premiere Elements 1.0 – Released in September 2004. It was focused on consumer miniDVcamcorder owners who wanted to create DVDs. It was codenamed Dick Tracy after Adobe Premiere's theme of detective code names. The development team for this product was based at Adobe's offices in San Jose, California, Arden Hills, Minnesota, and Noida, India.
• Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 – Released in September 2005. Adobe expanded video device support beyond DV camcorders to include digital still cameras that capture video (MJPEG, MPEG4, etc.), DVD camcorders (.vob files), mobile phones (.3GP, .3G2) and new hybrid video devices like the JVC Everio and Everio G (.MOD). It also aimed to address the lack of DVD configurability, one of the main criticisms of version 1. Unlike the first version, PE2.0 may not work with AMD processors, or Intel processors that do not support the SSE2 instructions.
• Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 – Released in September 2006. Adobe added HDV support, stop motion capture, audio narration, full-screen playback, and the ability to capture from WDM sources (such as webcams and analog capture cards). This version improved ease of use by adding Sceneline editing and allowing titles to be created and edited directly in the Monitor. New export formats were added for mobile phones, iPods and PSPs. An updated 3.0.2 version was the first to support Windows Vista, 32-bit only.^[7]
• Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 - Released in September 2007. Adobe added a Sharing Centre, an image stabilization filter and the ability to upload video files directly to YouTube. It also includes more video effects and transitions, a slightly-modified user interface allowing beginners to easily get started with the program (although it still retains unlimited video and audio tracks), the ability to burn Blu-ray DVDs, an audio mixer (like the version on Premiere Pro) and movie themes similar to the ones from iMovie HD 6.^[8] This version includes features such as Easily organize your photos and video clips from one convenient place, Organize video clips and photos with visual tags, Create your movie with drag-and-drop ease in the Scene line, Easily edit slide shows and movies to the beat of a favorite song, Jazz up the action with effects, transitions, and movie themes, Add animated titles, motion menus, and polished credits, Share movies on DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and Mobile Devices, & Easily upload to YouTube.
• Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 - Released in October 2008.^[9] The version numbers 5.0 and 6.0 were skipped in order to match Photoshop Elements 7.0 version in the bundle. This version includes AVCHD support, an automatic movie-creation wizard (similar to Pinnacle Studio's SmartMovie and iMovie HD 6's Magic iMovie), a built-in SmartSound music generator (previous versions would only work with SmartSound via a free plug-in downloaded from the SmartSound website), enhanced chroma-key technology, among other features. It still retains the ease of use and prosumer-style technology of Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0. This version includes new features such as View your movies from any web-enabled computer, quickly find your best video clips and photos with the Auto-Analyzer, Enjoy optimized editing, even when working with HD also known as High-Definition, Let Instant Movie automatically create a movie using creative techniques from Hollywood directors, Easily combine elements from different videos for entertaining results, Add musical soundtracks that automatically adjust to match the length of your movie, Easily combine elements from different videos for entertaining results & add musical soundtracks that automatically adjust to match the length of your movie.

This version includes a new ability to import clips from compact camcorders like Flip cameras as well as from DSLR still cameras, Easily fix audio problems, and create new effects. This version also gives the user the ability to easily create a convenient web DVD viewing experience, along with older version features.
• Adobe Premiere Elements 10.0 – Released in September 19, 2011 for Windows and MacOS. Among this version's new features is the ability directly upload videos to Facebook or YouTube. (64-Bit Ready)
• Adobe Premiere Elements 11.0 – Released in September 25, 2012 for Windows and MacOS. Changes in this version are: improved user interface, new effects and Vimeo upload. (64-Bit Ready)
• Adobe Premiere Elements 12.0 – Released in September 23, 2013 for Windows and MacOS. Changes in this version are: new effects, Motion Tracking

• Adobe Premiere Elements 2018 – Released in October 4, 2017 for Windows and MacOS. Changes in this version are: Candid Moments, Smart Trim, Freeze Frame with Motion Title, Create Bounce Back Effect, Animated Social Posts, Fix Action Cam Footage, One-click dynamic slideshows.^[13]
• Adobe Premiere Elements 2019 – Released in October 4, 2018 for Windows and MacOS. This version introduced a redesigned Home Screen which, upon launch, delivers automatically created photo and video slideshows and collages (Auto Creations) and features personalized content, 2 new Guided Edits, support for the import and editing of High Efficiency Image File Format and High Efficiency Video Coding media, the ability to export GIFs on MacOS, the ability to auto-synchronize audio with video captured at a Variable Frame Rate (VFR), new templates and a completely redesigned and easier to use Quick Edit mode. Direct share on Facebook, as well as support for Flash files, DVD (only on MacOS) and QuickTime format have been removed.^[14][15]

The new Production panel in Premiere Pro
The new Production panel in Premiere Pro
Productions provides a flexible, scalable framework for organizing multi-project workflows. With Productions, complex workflows can be divided into manageable projects, for overall efficiency and collaboration using shared local storage. Assets can be shared between projects within a Production, without creating duplicate files.

Individual editors can group related projects in a Production for improved organization and efficiency. Large projects (documentaries, films, TV) can be broken into reels or episodes where multiple editors collaborate according to their preferred workflow using shared storage network.

Productions includes the following capabilities:

Project locking - Prevent other users from overwriting your edits while your working on an individual project.
Cross project referencing - The ability to bring in sequences and clips from other projects in your production (without creating duplicate files).
Shared project settings - The ability to specify the same project settings across all projects in a production.

When working within a Production in Premiere Pro, you can lock a project when editing to prevent unwanted conflicts. Locked projects are available for use in a read-only state for other users, allowing editors to review each other's work and even copy pieces out of locked projects without needing to request the project owner to release the project.

A clip in one project can be reused throughout every other project in the production. This reduces the need for duplicate master clips. Avoiding duplicate master clips has multiple benefits:

You only need to manage master clip properties once.
Individual project file sizes remain small, which helps keep project load and save times fast.

Shared project settings
A Productions feature

Project settings include important settings such as scratch disk, GPU renderer, and capture settings. A benefit of having project settings synchronized is shared preview render files. When a sequence is rendered by any editor on the team it automatically shows as rendered for all other editors who open that project ensuring smooth playback for everyone and time savings for the team.


Premiere Pro 14.0.4 ends support for import of Premiere Clip files into Premiere Pro. In addition, Premiere Pro 14.0.4 includes a number of bug fixes.

Better ways of working with Motion Graphics templates
An improved interface and new controls make it easier to customize Motion Graphics templates created in After Effects, including adjusting the 2D position, rotation, and scale of elements. Edit text layers of the graphic by clicking on them in the Program Monitor.

Gradient support for shapes and text layers
Create more visually interesting graphics using gradients. Click on a shape’s color swatch in the Essential Graphics panel, then choose from Solid, Linear Gradient, or Radial Gradient fill types. Edit the angle of your gradient, color stops, and midpoints directly from the Program Monitor.

Replace clip for Motion Graphics templates
To replace a template in a timeline with an updated version from After Effects, simply hold Alt/Option +, and drag and drop the new replacement template onto an existing one. You can choose to have the template updated everywhere it was used in a project or limit to one instance. Where possible, your customizations will be preserved.

Toggle animation for graphics layers in the Essential Graphics panel
Animate more quickly with the ability to toggle on animation for Position, Rotation, Anchor Point, Scale, and Opacity by clicking their icons in the Essential Graphics panel and then adjusting the property in the panel or by editing the graphic layer directly in the Program Monitor. As you move your playhead, changes you make to the property are recorded as key frames.

Immersive Monitor
This new panel inside the Adobe Immersive Environment gives a view of the full sphere of footage and can be used to rotate the current view in the head mounted display.

Support for Windows Mixed Reality
Windows Mixed Reality headsets and controllers can now be used with the Adobe Immersive Environment on Windows. This gives users a broader range of hardware to edit and review VR 360 content..

Enhanced support for Team Projects
Enhancements include a streamlined invite process, improved tracking of collaborators, better project management, the ability to view read-only versions of your projects, and more.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.0.1

Start timecode was not imported or exported correctly when working with AAF files.
Some files from the Canon 5D Mark III camera were imported with the wrong timecode.
Playing/viewing waveforms in the Source Monitor caused audio dropouts with some XDCAM HD clips.
NTSC MXF OP1a files that were exported with drop-frame timecode had video data that was tagged as non-drop-frame.
Switching the Renderer project setting from Mercury Playback Engine Software Only to Mercury Playback Acceleration GPU Acceleration on a computer using OpenCL caused Premiere Pro to crash under some circumstances. Switching between the two settings on a computer using CUDA would in some cases cause problems with video and/or audio playback.
Crash when using full-screen, cinema mode on some computer systems.
Tape capture was not working correctly with some third-party systems.
Crash when capturing from tape using some BlackMagic hardware.
An extra, black frame was included at the end of the output when exporting to P2 MXF in some circumstances.
First two frames were being played twice on external monitor using Matrox MXO2.
Crash when using “hover scrub” with Matrox MXO2.
Audio/video synchronization was off by a few frames when playing video on external monitor.
The Export Frame button was not exporting the correct frame, instead exporting a frame one or two frames away from the current frame.
Some audio files and some MXF files would go offline or have their audio reconformed when the project was re-opened or when Premiere Pro was minimized or lost focus.
Crash when modifying an effect property while playback was occurring.
Hang/freeze when using a dissolve transition on an adjustment layer.
Dropped frames and audio/video synchronization issues when exporting to tape using some third-party hardware.
Information about dropped frames on output to tape was not accessible to third-party systems.
Some QuickTime files were imported with the wrong field order.
When audio was sent through a Mercury Transmit plug-in, any number of channels that was not 2 or 6 was treated as mono.
In HDV editing mode, File > Export > Tape could not be used with third-party hardware.
The current-time indicator (playhead) was not returning to the current time after using the Play Around command.
Last several frames of output when exporting to tape were black.
When encoding a 23.976 fps video to H.264, the duration of the video in the output .m4v file was too short, and audio drifted out of synchronization with the video.
Transparency (alpha channel) information from a dynamically linked After Effects composition was rendered incorrectly in Premiere Pro.
Importing some QuickTime OP1a files caused Premiere Pro to hang.
The duration of the audio track sent to SpeedGrade using the Send To SpeedGrade command was the length of the entire Premiere Pro sequence, not the length of the work area.
Timecode written to trimmed clips using the Project Manager did not match the source timecode for some QuickTime files.
Various other crashes.
