phulst / w800rf32-receiver

This library will allow you to easily communicate with a w800rf32 X10 receiver using a serial connection. This will make it very easy to write ruby code that should do certain things on input from (cheap) wireless remote controls and sensors.

From the wgldesigns.com website:

“The W800 family of RF receivers are designed to receive X10 RF signals generated from X10 products: Palm Pad remotes, key chain remotes, Hawkeye motion detectors, and many, many other X10 RF devices.

The W800 then sends these commands directly to your computer's RS232 or USB port, depending on the model purchased. This allows your computer to receive X10 RF commands from remotes and motion detectors directly, without having to broadcast any power line commands, thus minimizing power line clutter and improving home automation response times by bypassing the usual power line delay.“

This library makes receiving events from X10 wireless devices such as remote keypads, door/window sensors and motion sensors super easy. RF communication from many common X10 RF devices is supported, such as:

  • Many generic X10 wireless remotes, like the PalmPad remote control HR12A and the SlimFire remote KR19A

  • The well known Eagle Eye MS14A and Active Eye MS16A motion sensors

  • The DS10A wireless Door/Window sensor

These wireless keypads/sensors can be bought at SmartHome.com or through various ebay sellers for less than $10 a piece. Use them to build your own security system, or for anything else you can think of. The DS10A wireless sensor is great for hardware hackers and can be used in any scenario where you need a wireless switch input: for your garage door, cat door, mailbox, IR beam, etc.

Installation ==¶↑

install this library as follows:

# to install the serialport dependency gem sources -a http://gemcutter.org sudo gem install serialport # install w800 library gem install w800rf32-receiver

Your mileage with the serialport gem may vary, depending on your OS and ruby version. The 'official' version of serialport apparently doesn't work well with Ruby 1.9, but there are several clones out there with patches for ruby 1.9. The port by Hector Parra (version 1.0.4) is working well for me.

Usage ==¶↑

Pretty straightforward.

require'rubygems'require'w800rf32-receiver'receiver = W800rf32Receiver.new("/dev/ttyS2", :debug_enabled=>false, :filter_dups_within_secs=>5) receiver.on_messagedo|msg|puts"received message:"pmsgend

That's all. Replace the '/dev/ttyS2' with the correct serial port for your system and trigger one of your X10 devices to send a command.

The msg object passed in is a simple hash of properties containing the device type, state and addresses. More info on that below.

The :debug_enabled and :filter_dups_within_secs properties are both optional. If :debug_enabled is set to true, the library will print the raw serial data to the console for debugging. If :filter_dups_within_secs is set to a value greater than 0, the receiver library will remove all duplicate packets, thus reducing the number of callbacks that on_message makes greatly. In the above example, with value 5, the driver will limit callbacks for the exact same packet to at most once every 5 seconds. Without using this property, you may notice that a single button press on a remote may actually cause 5 or 6 duplicate packets to be transmitted.

IMPORTANT: the on_message method will go into an infinite loop, as it will poll the serial port continuously for new packets, then process and return them, then wait for the next packet to come in. If there's other stuff you need your program to do in the meantime, then make sure you call on_message on a separate thread. So don't call this from a Rails controller or something like that, unless you spawn a new thread first before you call it.

Generic X10 transmitters ===¶↑

When packets are received from generic X10 wireless transmitters (like the HR12 PalmPad remote, the SlimFire remote KR19A, or the MS14A/MS16A motion sensors), the message received will look like this:

{:device_type=>"X10", :house_code=>"A", :unit=>1, , :state=>"ON"}

:house_code will contain a value between 'A' and 'P', while :unit will have a value between 1 and 16. State will be 'ON' or 'OFF' when the dim command is received, the :unit property will be missing but there will be a :dim property with value 'BRIGHT' or 'DIM'

Note that this receiver library can't distinguish between many different types of X10 wireless devices, simply because their data protocol is identical for all types and the data packets don't contain any device identifier other than the unit and house code. It's therefore up to the developer to make the determination on whether this is a remote control or a motion sensor, etc, based on the unit and house_code of the transmitters.

Note that constants are defined in X10Constants, and it's better to test against X10Constants::LightLevel::BRIGHT than 'BRIGHT'

DS10A Door/Window sensor support ===¶↑

These little boxes are a hardware hacker's dream and the main reason for me to purchase the W800RF32 receiver. Most of the standard X10 wireless receivers (like the widely used CM17A Firecracker) can not handle the data packets from the DS10A so the w800 is actually one of only a few options for interfacing these devices with a computer.

This library's output for a DS10A looks as follows:

{:device_type=>"DS10A", :state=>"OPEN", :address=>"f8", :min_delay=>true, :low_bat=>false}

:address is a 2 digit hex address transmitted as a string :state will be either 'OPEN' or 'CLOSED'. When used with the provided magnetic reed switches on a window or door, there will be a closed loop and the state will be 'CLOSED'. :min_delay will be true if the slide switch on the DS10A is set to 'min'. :low_bat will be true if the DS10A is low on batteries.

Note that the DS10A will send it's status about once an hour, even if it's state never changed.
