Platform Notice: Cloud, Server, and Data Center - This article applies equally to all platforms.

Problem

This issue might surface in various scenarios as follows (but not limited to):

Scenario 1

When checking the Required fields to create an issue in a project using a REST API below, it will return an error.

Example GET REST Call:

The following error will be returned

Scenario 2

This issue might manifest itself when accessing Custom Fields configuration page from JIRA → Settings → Custom Fields.

The exception will be slightly different in this scenario, however, the Resolution below is still applicable.

Here's an example of an exception that comes up in the logs in Scenario 2:

Diagnosis

If the issue is integration related, please open the page "Logging & Profiling" on the remote application, and add the package com.atlassian.internal.integration.jira with the "DEBUG" level to let the error message parse in the server log.

Run the following SQL query towards the database to see if there is a duplicate field in a screen:

If there is a duplicate, an example of a result is below:

Cause

There is a field that is appearing on a screen more than once. The cause for the duplicate is not yet known.

Resolution

If there is a result shown by running the query above, it means that there is a duplicate in a screen. To remove it, follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to JIRA Administration > Issues > Screens
  2. Look for the Screen mentioned in the SQL query result e.g. "SSD: Scrum Default Issue Screen"
  3. Click Configure and look for the field e.g. "assignee"
  4. Remove one of the fields from the screen.

In case there are multiple tabs, check for each tab whether the field is called twice.

If the duplicate field is not shown on the screen or if the screen cannot be opened, the solution is to delete duplicate field reference directly from the database.

Please back up your database before proceeding with this workaround. Also, if possible, test the workaround on a staging environment before applying it on production.

The steps are as follows:

  1. Identify and write down ID value for each duplicate field reference; screen name and field identifier need to be modified accordingly. For the current example, the ID can be identified as follows:

  2.  Delete all duplicate rows from fieldscreenlayoutitem table and retain only one row; replace <duplicate_id> with the ID that you wrote down in previous step (in this example, there is only one duplicate row that needs to be deleted):

  3.  Restart Jira

Description

Media Deduper will find and eliminate duplicate images and attachments from your WordPress media library. After installing, you’ll have a new “Manage Duplicates” option in your Media section.

Before Media Deduper can identify duplicate assets, it will build an index of all the files in your media library, which can take some time. Once that’s done, however, Media Deduper automatically adds new uploads to its index, so you shouldn’t have to generate the index again.

Need faster indexing? Check out Media Deduper Pro.

Once up and running, Media Deduper provides two key tools:

  1. A “Manage Duplicates” page listing all of your duplicate media files. The list makes it easy to see and delete duplicate files: delete one and its twin will disappear from the list because it’s then no longer a duplicate. Easy! By default, the list is sorted by file size, so you can focus on deleting the files that will free up the most space.
  2. A scan of media files as they’re uploaded via the admin to prevent a duplicate from being added to your Media Library. Prevents new duplicates from being introduced, automagically!

Media Deduper comes with a “Smart Delete” option that prevents a post’s Featured Image from being deleted, even if that image is found to be a duplicate elsewhere on the site.

If a post has a featured image that’s a duplicate file, Smart Delete will re-assign that post’s image to an already-in-use copy of the image before deleting the duplicate so that the post’s appearance is unaffected. This feature only tracks Featured Images, and not images used in galleries, post bodies, shortcodes, meta fields, or anywhere else.

Looking for more features? Media Deduper Pro includes features for image fields from several popular plugins as well.

Note that duplicate identification is based on the data of the files themselves, not any titles, captions or other metadata you may have provided in the WordPress admin.

Media Deduper can differentiate between 1.) media items that are duplicates because the media files they link to have the same data and 2.) those that actually point to the same data file, which can happen with a plugin like WP Job Manager or Duplicate Post.

As with any plugin that can perform destructive operations on your database and/or files, using Media Deduper can result in permanent data loss if you’re not careful. Back up your data before you try out Media Deduper! Please! We really don’t want you to destroy your stuff!

Need more support? Media Deduper Pro includes dedicated support from Cornershop Creative.

Requirements

Media Deduper requires PHP 5.3 or later.

Installation

  1. Upload the directory to your plugins directory (typically wp-content/plugins)
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  3. Visit Media > Manage Duplicates to generate the duplicate index and see your duplicated files

FAQ

How are duplicates computed?

Media Deduper looks at the original file uploaded to each attachment post and computes a unique hash (using md5) for that file. Those hashes are stored as postmeta information. Once a file’s hash is computed it can be compared to other files’ hashes to see if their data is an exact match.

Why does the list of duplicates include all the copies of a duplicated file and not just the extra ones?

Because there’s no way of knowing which of the duplicates is the “real” or “best” one based on your preferred metadata, etc.

Should I just select all duplicates and bulk delete permanently?

NO! Because the list includes every copy of your duplicates, you’ll likely always want to save one version, so using Delete Permanently to delete all of them would be very, very bad. Don’t do that. You’ve been warned.

Instead, we recommend using the Smart Delete action (which is also found in the Bulk Actions menu). Smart Delete will delete the selected items one by one, and refuse to delete an item if it has no remaining duplicates. For example, if you have three copies of an image, and you select all three and choose Smart Delete, two copies will be deleted and the third will be skipped.

Again, we strongly recommend backing up your data before performing any bulk delete operations, including Smart Delete.

Does Media Deduper prevent duplicates from all methods of import?

At this time, Media Deduper only identifies and blocks duplicate media files manually uploaded via the admin dashboard — it does not block duplicates that are imported via WP-CLI or the WordPress Importer plugin.

Does this work with any plugins?

The free version does not include plugin support. Media Deduper Pro integrates with a number of popular plugins, including WooCommerce and Yoast SEO.

How can I contribute?

The git repository should be publicly available at https://bitbucket.org/cornershopcreative/plugin_media-deduper. Feel free to fork, edit, make pull requests, etc.

Reviews

It worked smoothly when I used smart delete method to delete duplicate images. However, all remained images are orphaned now, we need to attach each image manually to specific post. Though it does not affect in short run. However, in long run, it may be difficult to search and delete unused images due to their unattached stuatus, though they are actually used in the post, page or somewhere else. Now, I am searching for plugin that automatically attach orphaned (i.e. unattached) images to specific page-post in which they have used.
I'm on a tight deadline building a project, thought this plugin may be helpful as I iterate over a pretty massive data importer I'm building. Boy was I wrong. I don't get how anyone thought it was acceptable to A) Not respect pagination settings configured from the Screen Options menu or B) Allow for a smart delete of all images. It would literally take less time to code up a one time algorithm then sort through 100+ pages smart deleting one at a time. Further, it forgets the setting "Show Duplicates that Share Files" every time you run smart delete adding insult to injury of what is already a very poor UI. Even if you're not a coder, more likely than not it'd literally be faster for you to just go through the media library yourself and clean up duplicates. Waste of $20.
This is one of the best plugins for wordpress. Free version is good but pro is awesome so I decided to buy it and support developers as well. Thanks again
I was really hoping that this plugin would be helpful. I was maxing out my inodes on my hosting and was working to try and get my files down because I had ridiculous amounts of thumbnails and duplicated files after ten years of blogging and several host changes. I was recommended this plugin on a reddit forum. I was surprised that it found so many dupes, but when I checked them over, they did seem legit, as they were all showing the kinds of file names I expected (filename1, filename2, etc). Unfortunately, after I deleted them, and everything seemed fine, a few days later I started getting tons of alerts showing broken images everywhere. It turned out it had deleted a TON of files that were not dupes. Not only that, but because it merged files together, it changed alt text on files that shouldn't have been changed and changed the sharing images for certain posts to images belonging to completely separate posts. In short, it basically broke a TON of posts on my site, and I've now spent several days having to clean it up. I definitely feel like an idiot because I trusted the technology to know what it was doing, and I should have been more thorough in my inspection of what it had done. But I hope someone can learn from my mistakes and not waste their money like I did.
It's fully professional plugin to check duplicate media files(I've used for). It's really unbelievable for me that WordPress has this kind of help plugin. It works like a charm. The main benefit of this plugin is, it checks duplicate media while uploading a new image, WOW. Genius developer. Thanks, developer. I want to request to developer to improve and keep update this plugin.

Changelog

1.5.3

  • You can now search duplicate media from the Manage Duplicates screen using the “Search duplicate items” search box.
  • An issue that could cause PHP errors to appear on the Media Deduper plugin settings screen has been fixed. This issue did not affect other pages or admin screens.

1.5.2

  • Fix an issue that could cause a performance hit or MySQL bottleneck on sites with large numbers of posts during initial activation, or when upgrading from 1.4.2 or earlier to 1.5.0 or 1.5.1

1.5.1

  • Fix missing files in initial release of version 1.5.0, which could cause fatal errors

1.5.0

  • Media Deduper now indexes attachments asynchronously, meaning you don’t have to keep the browser open while it indexes your media library.

1.4.2

  • Media Deduper now fully supports the media trash feature (a.k.a. the MEDIA_TRASH constant; see this post for more information). As of Media Deduper 1.4.2, if the media trash feature is enabled:
    • The Manage Duplicates screen will list (and allow the user to delete or Smart Delete) both trashed and non-trashed attachment posts. Previously, only non-trashed attachments were listed on this screen, which caused confusing behavior if, for instance, a site’s media library contained two copies of an image, but one was in the Trash.
    • If a user attempts to upload a media file that already exists in the media library, but the existing copy of the file is in the Trash, the user will no longer be prevented from uploading the new copy.
  • Bugfix: The “Attach” or “Detach” links in the list table on the Manage Duplicates screen are now working again, after they stopped working in a previous version of the plugin.

1.4.1

  • Tweaks to messages about Pro: display on fewer pages, don’t display to users who don’t have permission to install new plugins, change wording slightly for clarity.

1.4.0

  • “Delete Preserving Featured” has been renamed to “Smart Delete”.
  • Smart Delete logic has been changed so it will never delete the last copy of a media item. Previously, Delete Preserving Featured would only save the last copy of a file if it or one of its duplicates was used as a featured image somewhere on the site.
  • By default, the list of duplicates is now sorted by size (largest first), and secondarily by date (newest first).
  • Media Deduper will now warn users before executing a Smart Delete operation, so you have a chance to cancel if you change your mind.
  • We’ve added information about the newly released Media Deduper Pro.
  • If your site is running PHP 5.2 or earlier, Media Deduper will now deactivate itself instead of causing errors.
  • Bugfix: The second bulk action menu, at the bottom of the list of duplicates, was not behaving correctly under some circumstances. This has been fixed.
  • Bugfix: Prior versions of Media Deduper could potentially have affected how other plugins’ screen options were saved. This issue would only have affected plugins that did unusual things (e.g. data validation logic) on the hook, and we haven’t run into this issue in the wild, but now it’s fixed anyway.

1.3.2

  • Bugfix: Fixing an issue that caused bulk actions (Delete Permanently, Delete Preserving Featured) to not work correctly on some versions of WordPress.
  • When a media file is changed (using the built-in WP image editor or the Enable Media Replace plugin, for instance), the plugin will now re-check whether the updated file is a duplicate of another file in the media library.
  • Minor code cleanup.

1.3.1

  • Bugfix: Fixing an issue that caused attachments to be listed as “duplicates” even after all identical attachments had been deleted.

1.3

  • Refactoring PHP to take advantage of WP 4.7’s new hooks for handling bulk actions.
  • Minor improvements to ‘success’ messages displayed after a bulk action has been performed on a set of duplicate attachments.
  • When uninstalled, the plugin will now delete the ‘mdd_size’ meta field that it adds to attachments. Previously it would only delete the ‘mdd_hash’ field.
  • Minor code cleanup.
  • Bugfix: Fixing an issue that caused the columns on the Manage Duplicates screen (File, Author, etc.) to not actually be sortable.
  • Bugfix: Ensuring that the ‘size’ column added to the main media library (in list view only) is styled properly & sortable.

1.2.2

  • Bugfix: The bugfix in 1.2.1 introduced a problem with performing smart deletions, so it’s been rewritten. Deduper and the normal Media Library should both work as expected now.

1.2.1

  • Bugfix: Eliminating behavior where bulk-deleting media from the media library would redirect user to Deduper admin page after performing deletion.

1.2.0

  • Adding sharing tools to help encourage spreading Media Deduper love!
  • Refactoring CSS into standalone CSS file.
  • Refactoring JS into standalone JS file.
  • Bugfix: Altering notification message shown when indexing is manually aborted to indicate that indexing is not yet complete.

1.1.1

  • Fixing a bug that would list all media as duplicates if all duplicates share a media file

1.1.0

  • Implemented a check to differentiate posts that are duplicates because they actually share a single media file, and updated the UI to allow for controlling the display of these posts.
  • Fixed a notice-level error for undefined $_GET variable

1.0.3

  • Fixed a bug with “Are you sure you want to do this?” appearing due to overly-aggressive referrer checking

1.0.2

  • Fixed a bug manifesting when bulk-deleting no items or running HHVM/PHP7

1.0.1

  • Fixed a bug where Media Deduper didn’t want to be uninstalled
  • Fixed a bug where bulk deletion didn’t always work
  • Fixed a minor notice-level PHP error

1.0.0

  • Implemented the ‘Delete Preserving Featured’ option to prevent inadvertently wiping out media assets in use as post thumbnails
  • Enhanced indexing to include the file size
  • Added a sortable ‘filesize’ column to the duplicates table that leverages the aforementioned size data
  • Refined screen option to control number of media posts shown per page
  • Included a new help tab to provide more information regarding the plugin, indexing, and deletion
  • Various bugfixes, including one that broke bulk deletion

0.9.3

  • Implementing Screen Options tab to control number of items displayed. This is a precursor to some other UI enhancements (hopefully).

0.9.2

0.9.1

  • Rewriting SQL query for finding duplicates to be massively more performant. Props to user gizmomol for the rewrite!

  • You'd be surprised just how many duplicate documents, photos, music and other files build up on your computer. Duplicate Cleaner can find them and help you safely remove them: saving space and simplifying your life!

"...it does it quickly and effectively. You won't believe how much space it frees up." - CNET

FIND DUPLICATE FILES AND FOLDERS

An easy to use interface helps you tell Duplicate Cleaner where to look and what to look for. The unique Selection Assistant will help pick the files to remove. You can delete the files or move them somewhere else for later.

SORT OUT YOUR IMAGE COLLECTION

Finding similar photos or images - even when edited, rotated or resized - is no problem with Duplicate Cleaner.

TIDY UP YOUR MUSIC COLLECTION

Duplicate Cleaner can scan all popular music formats. Find duplicates by Artist, Name or Title (exact or similar matches). Search on many other tags as well.

MORE POWER WHEN YOU NEED IT

Duplicate Cleaner has enough features to satisfy even the most demanding power user: find duplicate folders, unique files, search inside zip files, advanced filtering, automated selection and much more.

Finding duplicate files

Duplicate Cleaner's straightforward interface makes it a snap to start searching for duplicates. You can narrow your search by the type of file, sizes, dates and more. You can specify which drives and folders to look in, and you even get an option to search inside Zip archives.

You're not on your own when selecting which duplicate files to remove. The Selection Assistant lets you select files by groups, dates, drives, folders and more. You can select a favourite folder, and remove files that duplicate it elsewhere, or maybe select the smallest images, or the lowest quality mp3. Power and flexibility is the key!

Lists of files are all very well, but what if you've just made a copy of a directory? Duplicate Cleaner will show you that in the Duplicate Folder browser. Quickly see duplicated directory trees, and easily mark the ones you don't want to keep.

You can now specify an input folder to not 'Scan against itself'. This means you can compare 'clean' areas (e.g. archives, cd's) against other areas without generating unneeded lists of duplicate files.
You can also save Scan Profiles and recall different settings for different jobs at the touch of a button.

Duplicate Cleaner offers the flexibility to do what you choose with your duplicates: You can delete (Recycle bin optional), you can move or copy them, you can rename them. Advanced users may also be interested in the Hard Linking functionality offered. Of course several safeguards are offered to make sure that important system files and programs aren't deleted.

Find duplicate images

Duplicate Cleaner gives you the power to clean up your image library. Using an advanced visual comparison technique, you can find images that have been rotated, flipped, retouched, resized or saved in a different format. You control how exact or loose you want the comparison to be.

The special built-in image browser allows you to view the pictures in the duplicate group side-by-side, for comparison. This will aid in deciding what to keep. You can also display image and camera tags such as size, date taken, and colour depth.

Image comparison is fast, but to really speed up repeated scanning Duplicate Cleaner will store 'fingerprints' of your images. This way if you scan an image archive again, or scan it against a new folder, the cached fingerprint will be used. This will speed things up by over 90%.

Find duplicate music

You can scan and compare audio files using Duplicate Cleaner. Supported formats are MP3, OGG, WMA, M4A, M4P (iTunes), AAC, FLAC and WAV. Compare same or similar music tags across formats by Artist, Title and Album.

Duplicate Cleaner will list details of any audio it finds, including length, bit rate and sample rate in addition to the usual tags. The Selection Assistant can help you pick which files to remove - for instance the shortest version or lowest quality.
