My CD key or unique identification doesn't work
The unique identification number or CD key that comes included with the software or your computer should always work. However, there are different reasons that cause the number not to work, as mentioned below.
Entering the wrong code
If you are installing Windows and the code you are entering is not working, make sure it is the correct code. With many OEMs, (e.g., Dell, Hewlett Packard, etc.) the manufacturer will place the code used with your computer on the back or bottom of it. Use this code to install Windows on your computer. However, keep in mind that if your computer shipped with Windows XP and you're trying to install Windows Vista, the code on your computer only works for Windows XP. You would need to use the Windows Vista code that came with the software package.
Below are some additional reasons a Microsoft Windows product key may not work.
- Each version of Windows has its own unique product key, meaning a Windows XP Home product key is not going to work for Windows XP Professional.
- A Windows upgrade product key is not going to work for a full version of Windows.
- A Microsoft Windows OEM product key will not work with retail versions of Windows.
Using the wrong character
Make sure all the letters and numbers you are entering are correct. Characters, such as the capital letter "O" and the number "0," can be difficult to read. Make sure you're entering an "O" and not a zero if that is what needs to be entered. Other problem letters include a capital letter "i" that looks like a lowercase "l," or a lowercase letter "l" that looks like the number "1."
If you tried all combination of letters and numbers, enter the key code as someone else reads it out loud.
Maximum installed copies
As a form of protection many programs, especially games, only allow a few copies of the program to be installed. If you have shared the unique identification number with friends or installed the program onto multiple computers, you may have reached the maximum allowed copies that can be installed.
Never share your unique number or software with your friends or family.
Product key disabled
The program is a pirated copy and using an invalid or disabled product key. Downloading a program from the Internet or buying a program from an auction site, such as eBay, are two common ways a scammer may distribute pirated software. If you tried the above suggestions and cannot get the program to accept the key code, the product key is likely disabled or was never legitimate.
Request new product key
Finally, you can contact the developer of the program to see if a new product key or CD key can be given over the phone. However, if they decide you've purchased a pirated copy or have exceeded the maximum allowed installations, they will not give you a new number.

- If you bought your computer with installed operating system, you may find the Windows product key appeared in ProduKey utility is different from the product key on your Windows CD. This problem is mostly reported with Dell computers.
- From unknown reason, the product key of Visual Stuido .NET is written in the Registry as Office XP product...
- In old versions of Office (Office 2000 and below), the 'Product Key' value is not available.

ProduKey works on all versions of Windows. Both 32-bit and 64-bit systems are supported. However, some features, like viewing the product keys of another operating system instance, are only supported on Windows 2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista/7/8.License

ProduKey doesn't requite any installation process or additional DLLs. In order to start using it, simply extract the files to any folder you like, and then run the executable file - produkey.exeIf you want, you can also download ProduKey with full install/uninstall support (produkey_setup.exe), and then install it like any other software.
The main window of ProduKey displays the list of Windows, Office, and SQL Server products installed on your system. For each product, the "Product ID" and "Product Key" are displayed. If you want the view the product key information in another computer, or in another operating system within the same computer, use the command-line options below.
Command-Line Options
/remoteall | Enumerate all computers on your local network, and load the product key information from them. Be aware that this option is quite slow, and you may need to wait a few minutes until the product key information is displayed. In order to use this option, you must have Administrator privileges in all computers on your local network. |
/remotealldomain [Domain Name] | Enumerate all computers in the specified domain, and load the product key information from them. |
/remote [Computer Name] | Load product key information from the specified computer name. In order to use this option, you must log in to the remote computer with Administrator privileges. If you fail to connect the remote computer with ProduKey, read the instructions in the following Blog post: |
/iprange [From IP] [To IP] | Load product key information from all computers in the specified IP addresses range. In order to use this option, you must have Administrator privileges in all these computers. |
/remotefile [Computer Names Filename] | Load product key information from all computer names specified in the file. The file can be tab-delimited, comma-delimited, or CRLF-delimited. In order to use this option, you must have Administrator privileges in all computers specified in the computer names file. |
/windir [Windows Directory] | Load product key information from another operating system on the same computer. The [Windows Directory] specifies the base folder of Windows installation, for example: c:\windows, c:\winnt This feature is only supported on Windows 2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista/7. |

/sort <column> | This command-line option can be used with other save options for sorting by the desired column. If you don't specify this option, the list is sorted according to the last sort that you made from the user interface. The <column> parameter can specify the column index (0 for the first column, 1 for the second column, and so on) or the name of the column, like "Product Name" and "Product Key". You can specify the '~' prefix character (e.g: "~Installation Folder") if you want to sort in descending order. You can put multiple /sort in the command-line if you want to sort by multiple columns. Translating ProduKey to other languages
In order to translate ProduKey to other language, follow the instructions below:- Run ProduKey with /savelangfile parameter:
ProduKey.exe /savelangfile
A file named ProduKey_lng.ini will be created in the folder of ProduKey utility. - Open the created language file in Notepad or in any other text editor.
- Translate all string entries to the desired language. Optionally, you can also add your name and/or a link to your Web site. (TranslatorName and TranslatorURL values) If you add this information, it'll be used in the 'About' window.
- After you finish the translation, Run ProduKey, and all translated strings will be loaded from the language file.
If you want to run ProduKey without the translation, simply rename the language file, or move it to another folder.

If you reinstalled from retail CD, the system accepts only retail product keys. To make it accept OEM keys, go to HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\Pid and change the Pid value so that last three digits become "oem".
Example: if the original value was
76447000
then change it to
76447oem
The actual values may vary depending on your language and/or service pack level.

A product key is not a product ID (PID) number. A PID is created after a product is successfully installed. PIDs are used by Microsoft Customer Service to help identify the product when customers call in for support.
A product key is a unique combination of numbers and letters that is used during Microsoft software installation to "unlock" or open the product. If you do not enter the product key when you are prompted during the installation, the product may not open until you enter the product key.
Microsoft product keys contain 25 characters that are typically divided into groups of 5. The product key is typically located on an orange or yellow sticker on the back of the CD case or the DVD case. If the Windows operating system that you are using was preinstalled by your computer manufacturer, you may find the Windows product key sticker on the computer.
Product keys are specific to their software products. For example, you cannot use a Windows product key to unlock a Microsoft Office product.

Hi,
I'm really struggling to resolve this. I cannot get into the HKLM setup as everytime I boot the computer the only option I have is to activate window i.e. I cannot get into Windows itself until it has been activated and therefore cannot get onto the 'run' section.
I have contacted Microsoft on the number kindly provided above. They have suggested that when Windows was reinstalled it was probably from a different version than the one that came originally installed on the laptop, as such the product key provided on the bottom of the laptop would not work. They advised me to contact the manufacturer, ASUS.
I contacted ASUS and they have suggested that I need to purchase a recovery cd from another company, Asusparts. The ASUS people I contacted also tried to recover windows from a partition on my hard drive, but there was only one option in recovery mode - 1: C:/Windows and this required an administrator password.
I'm really confused as this seems like quite a straightforward issue. However, the only way I seem to be able to get around this at the moment is by either buying another copy of windows or a recovery cd. Indeed, I am not sure that a recovery CD is even the answer?? Nor, would I have a clue how to go about installing another version of windows onto my computer if I were to buy it??
Please advise if anyone has any more idea than I on ways to fix this issue? Thanks,
