A still evolving story...
I've been experimenting with the more recent versions on my TS-453A and I found that 8.3 was okay, but for some reason, when clicking on a photograph in the web view interface, Firefox ESR (52.7.3 on my Debian machine) did not show the photograph (just an empty browser pop-up window) whereas with 8.1.1 (running on a TS-219P+) the photograph showed up okay, so it looks like 8.3 has a minor bug.
I then tried the more recent versions (currently testing 8.5.1) but in all versions after 8.3, after the installation you are prompted (via a browser pop-up) to log into your Lynx account (and I couldn't log in; it claimed that I'd use incorrect login credentials).

Still didn't work, so I put the NAS into the Sophos UTM transparent skip list but still no joy, then I tried adding the second connected Ethernet port (which is the virtual switch one for my VMs) into the skip list, and that was successful (though that interface is not used for Twonky - in fact, it is 'pinned' to one IP address via the twonky settings entry of ip=10.11.11.22 - so I suspect they are trying hard to clamp down on the 3 Twonky instance rule, but as an unfortunate consequence of that, I guess it must be permitted to 'call home' over any active interfaces that it finds). As another unfortunate consequence of this new strategy, I would also assume you'd be 'stuffed' if you had all 4 Ethernet ports connected, as that would be seen - by the licensing server - as 4 separate instances of Twonky and thus it would disable your license.
Back to the 'calling home' failure part and looking at the license key page in a browser, I see the URL is https://smartlynx.lynxtechnology.com and when I click on the Firefox padlock, I see the certificate is verified by Amazon (not by me, so the above exception is working as it should) so I'm not sure why that didn't work (well, it does 'work', but why Twonky still thinks that it cannot 'see' the Internet) but I'll further investigate that when time permits (and I have also asked the Lynx support folks - who are actually commendably responsive - so likely they'll respond on Monday, perhaps with suggestions on additional sites that it needs unfettered access to, or perhaps with a suggestion on why the above exception doesn't seem to cut it).
Whilst that all worked (and still worked with the NAS removed from the transparent skip list) if you then reboot the NAS and access the Twonky settings page, you again get a red line of text asking you to connect to the internet (and critically, you cannot 'see' any of the local media on the NAS; Twonky web interface indicates that there's none present) so again, I have to put both Ethernet ports into the Sophos UTM skip list to enable it to activate itself, then once done, I can take them back out (and thus leave the NAS sitting 'behind' the Sophos UTM web filter); tedious stuff.
Why is this even slightly interesting? Well, over the years I have installed Twonky at a few sites where there is no Internet (e.g. customer's holiday home, or at a very remote location where broadband simply doesn't exist) and it has always worked as expected, but this new 'calling home' licensing strategy means that will no longer be possible; anything after Twonky 8.3 needs an Internet connection or it simply doesn't work (and this is your locally stored media serving that gets disabled).
As mentioned up a bit, I've fed back my latest findings to the Lynx support folks (asking if there are any other sites that the NAS needs access to) and if I crack it, I'll report back with the sites list, but to be honest, I'm not so keen on any software that needs an Internet connection to locally function (and Twonky has worked for over a decade without that requirement; I've been using Twonky since version 4) so this latest - and IMHO entirely unnecessary - development rather discourages me.

PS 8.5.1 does fix the missing picture issue mentioned in the first paragraph, and it is good news that it's fixed, but it is a shame that it exists in 8.3 as the simple answer for me would have been to revert to an earlier version (and that is the earliest version where a QPKG exists for 64 bit Qnaps).

Being a masochist, I'm running Sophos UTM in https proxy mode, so reckoning it was a certificate related issue, I contacted Linx to ask where the login server resided and they swiftly responded that it was lynxtechnology.com, so I added the below web filter exception:Lynx (Twonky) 8.4 New Features wrote:Activation of end user license keys now requires a Lynx account.
