Windows XP Service Pack 1 volume license product key encryption

To use this feature you must have the following items:
  • Windows XP Professional Volume License Media
  • Windows XP Professional Volume License Product Key
  • Windows XP SP1
To encrypt a Volume License Product Key in a script, follow these steps:
  1. Copy the I386 Directory and all subdirectories from your Windows XP Professional Volume License Media CD-ROM to a directory on your hard disk. For example, copy them to C:\Flat.
  2. Download and extract Xpsp1.exe to a directory on your hard disk.
  3. Run the following command to integrate SP1 into the I386 directory:
    c:\xpsp1\update\update.exe -s:c:\flat
  4. Run the following command to encrypt your Windows Setup answer file:
    c:\flat\winnt32.exe /encrypt:"xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx:y" /unattend:filename
    This command uses the following place holders:
    • xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx is your Volume License Product Key.
    • y is a value ranging from 5 to 60. This is the time in days that you want this script to be valid for.
    • filename is the script that you want to encrypt the Volume License Product Key in.

Notes

  • To encrypt the product key in a answer file, you must run Winnt32.exe from a computer that is running Windows XP or later. You cannot encrypt the product key on a computer that is running either Windows 2000 or Windows 98.
  • This procedure works for any valid Windows Setup answer file (for example, Unattend.txt, Winnt.sif, Sysprep.inf, or Ristndrd.sif ).
  • You have to install from a Windows XP Professional source directory into which Windows XP SP1 has been integrated.
  • The /encrypt command automatically adds the "Productkey=" line to your file or updates an existing Productkey or ProductID entry.
  • When the time period specified has ended, the user is prompted to manually enter a product key during Setup.
When you run this command, you do not receive any dialog boxes or error messages. To determine whether the command is successful, see the %WINDIR%\Winnt32.log file. The following is a sample command to encrypt a product key that is not valid for Volume License media:

Get Windows XP Product Key for Free

This post is all about Windows XP product key. You can check the list of working keys here. Morevover, you will learn how to activate Windows XP with the key. How to change the key if you have Windows XP  already installed. Lastly, how to activate Windows XP without a key.

Windows XP Operating system

Windows XP is an operating system created by Microsoft in 2001. Soon after its release, it became the most widely used personal operating system in the world.

Even today, it has thousands of users, despite the fact that Microsoft stopped providing support in 2011. There are no new updates available for this operating system.

You can’t update your Windows system by using a Windows XP serial key. If you’re still using this version of Windows, your system will work just fine, but it may cause some security issues on your computer.

Still, if you’re searching for a Windows XP product key, you have landed on the right page. Windows XP activation keys aren’t easy to find these days, but we have some working keys here. Try your luck with any of the free Windows XP keys found below.

Do you need a serial key to install Windows XP?

Windows XP has two types of licensing agreements.

1. VOL (Volume Licensing for Organization)

2. VLK (Volume Licensing Key)

If you have a copy of the Windows XP CD/DVD and you notice “VOL” written on it, you don’t need a Windows XP product key. You can install your copy of Windows without providing a serial key.

On the other hand, if “VLK” is written on your Windows CD/DVD, you have a retail edition of the operating system. You need to provide your genuine Windows XP product key to install the operating system.

Where is your Windows XP product key?

If you have the original Windows XP CD/DVD, the serial key is written on the box. If you can’t locate it on the CD/DVD or you don’t have the original CD/DVD, you won’t be able to find it easily.

Manually locating the Windows XP product key is nearly impossible because of the various encryptions that Microsoft uses. Therefore, your only options are the following.

Extract it using a key finder program

The first method to find the Windows XP product key is to use a key finder program. For this method to work, you need to install your copy of Windows on your computer using a stock key. Once Windows boots, you can follow the instructions below.

1. Download a key finder here

2. Install the program on Windows XP

3. Run the program and click on the “Find Serial Number” button

4. The program will display the serial number on the screen

5. Write down this serial number

Use a free Windows XP serial key

If you can’t find your serial key using the above method — or maybe you just don’t want to install a shady app on your PC — you can use a free Windows XP product key.

This method is simple, as you only need to scroll down and copy a serial key to proceed with the installation of Windows.

Do you need a Windows XP 32-bit or 64-bit key?

Should you use a serial key for Windows XP 32-bit or 64-bit edition? I know it’s a troubling question. Read the detailed answer below.

Windows XP was released for both 32-bit and 64-bit computers.

The bits (32 or 64) refer to your CPU’s architecture. If you have a 32-bit processor, you can only install a 32-bit operating system – Windows XP 32-bit, in this case. If you have a 64-bit processor, your CPU can handle a larger amount of memory and you should install the Windows XP 64-bit version.

When Windows XP launched, the majority of PCs were using 32-bit hardware. It meant that 90% of computers were equipped to run a 32-bit operating system at that time. However, you might have a 64-bit edition of Windows XP running on your PC.

To find out which version of Windows your computer is running, follow these steps.

1. Click on the Start button in Windows

2. Open System from the Start menu

3. Right-click on Computer and click on Properties

4. Now go to the System tab

5. Here you can see the system type

Note the version of Windows your computer is running from this screen.

What are my options if I have damaged software cds or a lost product key?The following information will explain what your options are.

  1. Does Dell have the product keys for Works2002 and OfficeXP?
    NO...These product keys are restricted by Microsoft.
    We do not have a generic product key that we can give you.

  2. Doesn't Dell have to replace my product key or software?
    NO...Your warranty does not cover software unless it came
    damaged from the factory. (Manufacturer Defect).
    You must also report any software damage to Dell within the
    first 30 days from the system invoice.
    If the software did not come with a product key, contact
    Dell for a replacement within 30 from the invoice date.

  3. Does Microsoft have a product key they can give me?
    Microsoft may or may not be able to provide you with a
    product key. Microsoft may require that you purchase a software
    license to get a product key. You may want to contact Microsoft
    to see if they have any way of providing a product key.

  4. Is there anyway Dell can replace my product key?
    The only way Dell can replace your product key is to replace
    your software suite. Under "very special" circumstances,
    Dell Tech support may replace your software suite which would
    include a new product key. Contact Dell Tech support or Customer Care
    to get information on or request a replacement of your software.

  5. What if Dell Tech Support or Customer Care state they cannot
    replace my product key or software?
    In such a case, you should purchase another copy of the software suite.

  6. Can I use a product key or software cds from a friend or off the web?
    This is totally up to you. Be aware that doing so is illegal and violates
    the software license of the product you are using.

  7. Can I purchase the software or product key from another user at a cheaper price?
    Yes, this is allowed under the license agreement.
    The seller of the software must sell all the cds for that program or application, and must also include all the upgrades they may have for
    that program or application. You cannot make copies of the software, and
    the seller of the software is not allowed to keep any manuals, cds, or other
    components of the software that is being sold.

  8. What if I need my retail Microsoft software replaced?
    The following Microsoft Kb article describes your options for replacing
    retail versions of Microsoft software.

  9. What software can Dell provide a product key for?
    In order to get a generic product key you must contact Dell Tech Support.
    Tech Support must verify who you are, and that you own the system.
    Dell can *only* provide product keys for the following software:

    -->Office 97 - All Versions
    -->Works Suite 1999
    -->Works Suite 2000
    -->Works Suite 2001
    -->Office 2000 Academic
    -->Office 2000 - Pro Version
    -->Windows 95 - All Versions
    -->Windows 98
    -->Windows 98 Second Edition
    -->Windows Millennium
    -->Windows NT 4.0
    -->Windows 2000 - Professional
