Company News

[2] Apple Enhances Power Mac G4 Line
Apple has enhanced its entire Power Mac G4 line to include the new Rage 128 Pro graphics card, featuring up to a 40 percent increase in 3D graphics performance and a digital video interface that supports Apple's new digitally-driven LCD displays. In addition, the 350 MHz configuration has been upgraded to the same architecture used in the 400 MHz and 450 MHz configurations, and now comes with a DVD-ROM drive, AGP graphics, and support for Apple's AirPort wireless networking (optional US$ 99 card required). The three new Power Mac G4 configurations are available immediately at the same prices as their predecessors.

[3] iBook is Number One Selling Consumer Portable in U.S.
The blueberry iBook was the top selling portable computer in the U.S. retail market in October, according to PC Data. Based on this report, combined sales of iBook and PowerBook gave Apple an 11 percent share of the U.S. retail portable market in October.

[4] Apple Products Rack Up Magazine Awards
This month Apple products have garnered a number of "product of the year" awards from magazines around the world. Awards include:

The iBook and Power Mac G4 were both prize winners in Popular Science's "1999 Best of What's New" awards.

BusinessWeek Online awarded a "Decade of Design Gold Medal" to the iMac.

The iBook was awarded "Design of the Year" by Tomorrow magazine, Germany's leading monthly Internet Magazine.

The renown French IT newspaper, "01 informatique," conducted a national survey among IT directors. These directors ranked Apple as the best company for desktop, laptop, and server systems, as well as reliability and ease of use. Apple beat out such companies as IBM, Dell, and Hewlett Packard in these categories.

PC Magazine honored Apple with several Tech Innovation Awards:

  • Best Desktop System: PowerMac G3, and G4, 2nd and 3rd places, respectively, out of three awards total
  • Excellence in Usability: PowerMac G3, 2nd place out of four awards total.
  • Best Internet Product: QuickTime 4, 5th place out of five awards total.
  • Best Graphics Hardware: PowerMac G4, 2nd place out of three awards.
  • Best System Design (Processor): Motorola G4, 3rd out of three awards.

Injection Pro 2.3 from Glucose Development Corp. uses natural language technology to automatically generate content-specific META tags and insert them into web pages. This version improves the effectiveness of Injection's content-based META tags, adds SGML Style files that allow webmasters to tweak how their site is injected, and incorporates Mac OS 9 compatibility fixes.

Meta Tag Manager 2.0.1 from YAV Interactive is the ultimate tool for fine-tuning and optimizing a document's meta tags. This process can enhance a page's search engine relevancy ranking and assure that queries find your page. Version 2.0 adds Mac OS 9 and QuickTime 4.0 support; and Version 2.0.1 includes bug fixes.

VSE Be Found 1.5 from Voget Selbach Enterprises (VSE) analyzes web pages and gives concrete tips on how to obtain a higher ranking on search engines. Then it automatically submits them to popular search engines, such as AltaVista, Excite, and Lycos. The new version fixes various bugs and supports 178 search engines from 16 different countries.

Web Devil 4.8.1 is a tool for easily downloading web pages and their associated images, textures, and links. Changes include added support for remembering window positions and sizes, and removal of some unnecessary URL decoding.

WebsiteDietician Beta cleans up HTML code, reduces the size of web pages, and increases the speed at which web pages are loaded. It features batch file processing of entire folders, automatic PICT-to-JPEG conversions, live previews of the quality loss caused by JPEG compression, and drag-and-drop capabilities. Blue Line Studios is looking beta testers.

Eudora Internet Mail Server (EIMS) 3.0b2 from Qualcomm provides large networks of computers with a place to collect and send e-mail. It supports multiple domain name e-mail addresses, as well as high-level features to expand your e-mail services. This version adds IMAP4rev1 support, AppleScript support for adding and removing domains and domain aliases, the EIMS Mail Utility, appearance manager support, and more.

ListSTAR 2.0 from StarNine Technologies is a powerful list server for hosting e-mail-based discussion lists and running auto-reply "mailbots." This version includes native support for PowerPC, the ability to use secondary IP addresses (allowing e-mail servers like WebSTAR Mail or EIMS to run on the same machine), integrated ListSTAR Template scripts for easy script creation, and better compatibility with newer, PowerPC-native versions of AppleScript.

WebSTAR Server Suite 4.1fc1 from StarNine Technologies is a set of easyÑto-use Internet servers for the Mac OS, providing support for Web, FTP, mail, and proxy services. This public beta version sports a dramatically faster Web server, adds a new SMTP/POP/IMAP e-mail server with LDAP and remote Web-based e-mail access capabilities, incorporates Lasso-based FileMaker Pro and ODBC database publishing capabilities, and adds integrated SSLv2 and SSLv3.

GL4Java 2.1.2.1 is an OpenGL binding for Java. It was originally written by JauSoft for UNIX and Windows, and this is a port of this library for the Mac OS. GL4Java is released under the GNU Library General Public License. Source code and sample programs are provided.

[14] New Releases: Apple OpenGL 1.1.2, Carbon 1.0.2 SDK 1.0.2, AppleShare IP First Aid 6.3, AppleShare IP Registry 6.3.1, Apple USB DDK 1.4b2

Apple OpenGL 1.1.2 enables your computer to display three-dimensional graphics using applications designed to take advantage of OpenGL. This installer includes all of the libraries for accelerating rendering on systems with RAGE II, RAGE Pro, and RAGE 128 video. This version continues to work with the complete 1.0 SDK. Apple's OpenGL 1.1.2 ensures that the Mac OS is a great platform for 3D games.

The latest version of the Carbon 1.0.2 Software Development Kit (SDK) for Mac OS is now available to all ADC members. This SDK provides all the files needed to begin Carbon development. CarbonLib 1.0.2 supports Mac OS 8.1 and greater.

AppleShare IP First Aid 6.3 is a repair and backup utility for AppleShare data files. It checks the integrity of these files and attempts to repair files that may have become corrupted. It also simplifies the task of making backup copies of these files. Version 6.3 of this software is included with AppleShare IP 6.3 and can repair corrupted files on AppleShare IP 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2.

The AppleShare IP Registry 6.3.1 update fixes the problem of identifying which version of AppleShare IP is used on a given system. Version 6.3.1 now properly updates the Users & Groups Data File and launches the appropriate version when starting the Web & File Server. Note: Only users who have upgraded to AppleShare IP 6.3 from a previous version of AppleShare IP need this update.

Apple USB DDK 1.4b2 is a new beta version of Apple's Universal Serial Bus (USB) driver development kit. It includes extensions that may eliminate USB problems with the current drivers.
